Is Opera's Password Manager Safe to Rely On?
Opera's built-in password manager saves and autofills your logins, but it's the weakest of the mainstream browser vaults β no password generator and no breach monitoring. An honest audit of what it protects, whether it's safe to rely on, and the clean CSV path to export your passwords out.

Opera has offered to save every login you've typed for months, and you've been clicking "yes" without really deciding whether that's smart. Now you've got a browser full of saved passwords and a nagging question: is trusting Opera's built-in vault actually fine, or is it the kind of thing you'll regret the day something leaks?
Here's the honest answer, from someone who runs a dedicated password manager and has poked at the browser built-ins to see how they hold up. Opera's manager isn't dangerous β but it's the most bare-bones of the mainstream browser vaults, and two missing features decide whether you should lean on it.

What Opera's password manager actually is
Opera is built on Chromium, the same engine as Chrome, so its password manager works the way you'd expect: when you log in somewhere, Opera offers to save the credentials, then autofills them next time. There's nothing to install and no separate app β it lives inside the browser.
It syncs across your devices, but with one condition: you need an Opera account and sync switched on, and the passwords only travel between copies of Opera. There's no standalone Opera vault app for your phone the way dedicated managers ship one. If Opera is your only browser on every device, that's seamless. If it isn't, you've already found the ceiling.
What it does fine
Let's not strawman it. For the basic job β remember my logins and type them for me β Opera's manager is free, instant, and genuinely convenient. Autofill is smooth, saved entries are encrypted at rest under your operating-system account, and the import/export flow is refreshingly clean compared to some rivals.
For a casual user with a handful of forum, news and shopping logins, that's a real quality-of-life upgrade over typing passwords by hand or β far worse β reusing the same one everywhere.

Every mainstream browser now has a built-in manager, and they are not equal. Chrome, Edge and Firefox have added breach detection and password generators over the last few years. Opera is the one that largely hasn't β so "browser password managers are all the same" is exactly the assumption that gets you in trouble here.
The two gaps that matter
Everything above is fine. These two things are why you shouldn't fully rely on it.
No password generator
A good manager doesn't just store passwords β it creates strong, unique ones for you, so every account gets a different random string you never have to remember. In a hands-on comparison by MakeUseOf, Opera didn't offer password suggestions at all. Without a generator, you're back to inventing passwords yourself, which is how reuse and weak picks creep in. The vault is only as strong as what you put in it.
No breach monitoring
The other browsers will now warn you when a saved login turns up in a known data breach, or flag ones that are weak or reused. Opera doesn't. So if a site you use gets breached, your Opera vault stays silent β you'd find out from the news, if at all. That missing safety net is the difference between a password store and a password manager.

Opera's vault has no master password or auto-lock of its own β it's protected only by your device login. Anyone sitting at your unlocked computer, in your Opera profile, can open settings and reveal your saved passwords in plain text. Treat a shared or unattended machine accordingly.
So is it safe to rely on?
For low-stakes logins, on a device only you use, inside Opera β yes, it's safe enough, and better than the alternatives most people default to (reuse, or a sticky note). For your email, bank, or anything that unlocks other accounts β no. Without a generator you can't guarantee those are strong and unique, and without breach monitoring you won't know when to rotate them.
The single most useful thing you can do if you stay is enable two-factor authentication on your Opera account, so a stolen password alone can't sync-steal your whole vault. How to export your passwords out of Opera
The good news: you're not trapped. Opera exports to a standard CSV that every dedicated manager can import.
- Open Opera Settings β Privacy & Security β Autofill β Passwords.
- Click the three-dot menu in the top-right of the saved-passwords list.
- Choose Export passwords and confirm with your device password.
- Import that CSV into your new manager (Bitwarden, 1Password and the rest all have a one-click importer).
- Delete the CSV file afterwards β it's an unencrypted copy of every password you own.
That last step matters more than it looks: a leftover export file on your Downloads folder undoes the whole point of moving to a secure vault.
