Good news — the answer is simpler than the comparison tables make it look. Apple's Passwords app is genuinely capable now, and for a lot of people it really is enough. Whether you're one of them comes down to a single question, and it isn't about features.

What Apple Passwords actually is now
If your mental image is the old iCloud Keychain buried three menus deep in Settings, update it. Since iOS 18, Apple ships a dedicated Passwords app — its own icon, its own home screen presence — and it's a proper manager.
It stores your passwords, passkeys, two-factor verification codes, and Wi-Fi passwords in one place, and it syncs them across iPhone, iPad, Mac and Vision Pro through iCloud. It also does shared groups, so a household can share a set of logins that stays in sync for everyone in the group.

The built-in 2FA verification codes matter more than people realise. Apple Passwords can generate your one-time login codes and store the password, so you're not juggling a separate authenticator app for everyday accounts. That's a feature Opera and the bare browser vaults simply don't have.
Where it's genuinely strong
Give Apple real credit here. It's free, there's nothing to install, and the autofill is the best part of the whole experience: it works system-wide — inside apps and in third-party browsers, not just Safari — because iOS lets it act as the device's autofill provider.
Passkeys are first-class, family sharing is built in, and everything is end-to-end encrypted under your Apple Account. For an all-Apple person, that is a complete, zero-effort setup that costs nothing and asks nothing of you.
Where it hits a wall
The strengths all assume one thing: Apple hardware. Step outside it and the cracks are immediate.
No Android, no Linux
There is no Apple Passwords app for Android or Linux — full stop. If your partner carries a Pixel, or you keep a Linux laptop, those devices simply can't reach the vault. For a mixed-device household, that's not an inconvenience, it's a dealbreaker, and no setting fixes it.
Windows is second-class
Windows is the halfway case. Through iCloud for Windows and the iCloud Passwords browser extension you can get your passwords on a PC — but passkeys don't cross to Windows. If you're increasingly signing in with passkeys, the one that lives on your iPhone won't be there when you sit down at a Windows machine.

The all-Apple assumption is fragile. It only takes one person you share logins with switching to Android, or one new work laptop running Windows or Linux, to strand part of your vault. Decide for the household you actually have, not the all-iPhone one you picture.

For an all-Apple person or an all-Apple family, yes — Apple Passwords is genuinely enough, and paying for a manager buys you little. For anyone with an Android phone, a Linux machine, or a mixed-device family, no — you'll want a dedicated manager that treats every device as first-class.
The reassuring part: this isn't a life sentence. Apple now supports the standard FIDO Credential Exchange format for exporting and importing passkeys, so moving to another manager later is finally becoming a clean process rather than a copy-paste nightmare. What I use, and why
In my experience the feature checklist was never the real decision — my devices simply don't all wear an Apple logo. The moment a Linux box and a non-Apple phone entered the picture, an Apple-only vault was off the table no matter how good the app got.
