Headscale: Same Protocol, Your Own Server

Headscale is an open-source, BSD-licensed reimplementation of Tailscale's coordination server. It speaks the same protocol, so the official Tailscale clients — Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, Android — connect to it exactly as they would to Tailscale's own infrastructure, except the server distributing keys and IP assignments is one you run. I run Headscale on a Proxmox VM on my homelab, and the coordination server itself is genuinely light — the container idles under 100MB of RAM. The real cost isn't compute, it's ops: you are now the one applying security updates, handling certificate renewal for the server's HTTPS endpoint, and debugging DERP relay behavior yourself instead of opening a support ticket. Headscale scopes to a single tailnet by design, which fits a home or single-org setup exactly — it isn't trying to be a multi-tenant SaaS replacement.

Headscale is volunteer-maintained, not vendor-backed. If your coordination server goes down and you're travelling, there's no support line — only your own backup and your own ability to redeploy it. Don't put it on hardware you can't reach remotely.

Netbird's free cloud plan covers 5 users and 100 machines at no cost — slightly tighter on users than Tailscale's free tier, looser on the machine count. The more interesting option for this audience is the Community Edition: it's open-source and self-hostable with no per-user license fee. According to Netbird's own self-hosted vs. cloud documentation, self-hosting no longer even requires an external identity provider as of version 0.62 — built-in local user management now ships in the open-source edition. Enterprise features like SCIM provisioning and event streaming do require a commercial license on top of the free Community Edition, so budget for that only if you specifically need centralized identity sync.

Tip

Netbird is the one to try first if Headscale's fully-manual ops sound like more than you want, but Tailscale's SaaS coordination server sounds like more trust than you want to extend. It's the middle setting between the two.

ZeroTier: Virtual Layer 2, and a Shrinking Free Tier

ZeroTier works differently at the protocol level — it emulates a virtual Ethernet switch (Layer 2), not a Layer 3 mesh, which matters for older LAN-broadcast-dependent protocols, some game servers, and legacy device discovery that a pure WireGuard mesh doesn't carry. Worth checking before assuming it's still the generous free option some older comparisons describe: ZeroTier's current pricing page, effective 4 August 2026, lists the free Personal tier at 10 devices on 1 network with 1 network admin, restricted to non-commercial use. The first paid tier, Essential, runs $18/month for 10 devices plus $2/month per additional device.

That non-commercial restriction is easy to miss — a homelab used purely for personal projects is fine on the free tier, but ZeroTier now expects a paid plan the moment any commercial use enters the picture, a stricter line than either Tailscale or Netbird draws on their free tiers.

Twingate: Zero-Trust Access, Not a Mesh Network

Twingate's free Starter plan allows 5 users, 50 resources, and 10 remote networks, with the first paid tier (Teams) starting at $5 per user per month. Architecturally, Twingate isn't trying to be a mesh network at all — it grants per-resource access with identity-provider integration and audit logging, which is exactly what compliance-heavy setups need and exactly more overhead than a homelab does. If the goal is "let my devices reach each other," Headscale or Netbird fit better. If the goal is "log precisely who accessed which internal app, and prove it to an auditor," Twingate is the specialist tool for that job, not Tailscale's competitor for this audience's use case.
