That single change is why so many people who happily ran Plex for a decade are suddenly asking whether the free, open-source alternative β Jellyfin β is good enough to move their whole library to.
I run both on the same Proxmox box, so this isn't a spec-sheet comparison. It's what actually happens when you point real clients at each server and try to stream, transcode, and watch from outside the house.

For a decade Plex was the easy answer: install it, point it at your files, watch anywhere. The 2025β2026 changes broke that story. Plex raised prices for the first time in ten years, put remote streaming behind a paywall, and then tripled the one-time Lifetime Pass. Jellyfin didn't change at all β it was free before and it's free now.
The decision is no longer "which is nicer." It's "is the polish worth an ongoing bill, or a $750 lump sum, when a free tool now does 90% of the same job?"
What each one actually is
Plex is a polished, commercial media server. You run the server on your own hardware, but your account lives with Plex, and remote connections are brokered through Plex's relay. That central layer is what makes it so easy β and what you're now paying for.
Jellyfin is a free, open-source server (forked from Emby's last open release). There is no third-party account, no relay, and no paywalled tier β every feature ships to everyone. The trade-off is that anything Plex's cloud did for you, you now arrange yourself, most notably remote access.
The cost reality that drives the decision
Here are the current numbers, straight from Plex's own pricing and its July 2026 announcement:

The nuance most listicles miss: in-home streaming stays free on both servers. The Plex paywall only applies when you (or people you share with) watch from outside your home network. If everyone who uses your server is under your own roof, Plex's price changes barely touch you.

Transcoding on real homelab hardware
The single biggest practical factor β and the one spec sheets skip β is transcoding. If a client can play a file natively (direct play), the server just streams the bytes and CPU load is near zero. The moment a client can't handle the codec, container, or bitrate, the server has to transcode on the fly, and that's where weak hardware falls over.
In my homelab, the thing that turned a struggling server into a comfortable one was an Intel iGPU with QuickSync, passed through to the container. Both Plex and Jellyfin use QuickSync for hardware-accelerated transcoding β the difference is that Plex gates hardware transcoding behind Plex Pass, while Jellyfin gives it to you for free. With QuickSync doing the work, a modest mini-PC handles multiple 1080p transcodes without breaking a sweat; 4K HDR with tone-mapping is the hardest case and the one to test before you commit.

Before blaming your server, aim for direct play. Use a client and file format your devices support natively (many smart TVs and streaming sticks handle common codecs directly), and you may avoid transcoding entirely β on either server.
Getting to Jellyfin from outside your house
Because Jellyfin has no relay, remote access is the one job you take on yourself β and it's very doable. You have two sane routes:

- A VPN β WireGuard or Tailscale puts your phone on your home network, so nothing is exposed to the public internet at all. This is the safest default.

Never expose a raw Jellyfin server directly on the open internet with port-forwarding and no protection. Put it behind a reverse proxy with TLS, or better, behind a VPN β a media server full of your accounts is not something to leave open.

There's no single winner β there's a winner for your situation.

You're setting up fresh, you're cost-sensitive, you care about privacy, you own capable hardware (especially an Intel chip with QuickSync), and you're comfortable spending an evening on remote access. You get every feature for free and you owe nothing to anyone's cloud.
Stick with Plex ifβ¦
You want the most polished smart-TV apps and the least-friction sharing with non-technical family, you already own a grandfathered Lifetime Pass, or you simply want turnkey remote streaming and will happily pay for it. Convenience is a real feature, and for some households it's worth the money.
