Adidas Prohibits Fans from Adding ‘44’ to German Team Football Jersey

To prevent potential controversy, Adidas has implemented a ban on football enthusiasts from personalizing the German national jersey with the number '44'. This decision was prompted by concerns regarding its resemblance to the symbol utilized by Nazi SS units during World War II.

The SS, a paramilitary group under Adolf Hitler's regime, is infamous for its role in orchestrating the genocide of Jewish individuals across Europe. The logo's similarity to the number '44' raised red flags, leading Adidas to take proactive measures.

The issue was initially brought to light by historian Michael König, who deemed the design as "questionable". Alongside this, the German away kit's distinctive pink color has stirred debate, with supporters praising its representation of diversity while critics accuse the German Football Association (DFB) of straying from tradition for commercial gain.

Adidas spokesperson Oliver Brüggen has emphasized that the design was not intended to evoke Nazi symbolism, asserting the company's commitment to combating xenophobia and antisemitism. Brüggen affirmed that customization options for the jerseys would be restricted.

The SS emblem, dating back to 1929, has become synonymous with the heinous acts committed by the Nazis. Members of the SS were involved in overseeing concentration and extermination camps, such as Auschwitz, where countless lives were lost.

This isn't the only recent instance of football attire sparking controversy. Alterations made to England's St George's cross on the team's shirt collar by Nike drew criticism, with some viewing it as disrespectful.
